Eatery Business…Outlet Shopping & Cocktail Hour
In the late 1990s, I worked managing a restaurant that was located next door to a Coach purses store. Ladies would come in from a rough afternoon of shopping and sit down with their brand new bags and order cocktails. I am not one to shop at outlet stores, but as I served food and drinks, I certainly got the impression that it was exhausting. These women were spent. There were other outlets in the area, of course, although the Coach was the biggest draw, and we were well-situated to provide sustenance after a hard day of shopping.
Part of what makes outlet shopping exhausting is that it’s not set up like a mall, with the stores all clustered together; they tend to be spread out. There’s a lot of footwork involved, which is probably why online outlet shopping has increased in popularity. The problem, of course, is that if you shop online, there’s no one to serve you cocktails when you’re done.
